October 2025 : This graphic evolutionary tree of mammals has just been updated with recent research that used the largest mammalian genomic dataset to date, aligning 241 mammalian whole genomes at one time. The research identified the timeline and diversification of placental mammals over the last 100 million years. They found that mammals began diversifying prior to the extinction event 66 million years ago as a result of continental drift and sea level rise in the late Cretaceous period, isolating lineages and leading to speciation. A second surge of diversification, within orders, occurred following the extinction event, believed to be because of ecological opportunities. Branching and timing have been adjusted in the graphics to reflect these new discoveries, and some key changes include Perissodactyla from sister of Cetartiodactyla to sister of Ferae, the placement of tree shrews as sister to primates and colugas, and pinnipeds as sister to mustelids.
