A History of Existing Life
A History of Existing Life
A “tree of life” is the ideal visual of life’s evolutionary history–highlighting the diversity, the common ancestry, the survivors, the mass extinctions, and the evolution of key traits that changed the course of history for many species.
Our tree of life identifies when all current living organisms first evolved in geological time. It traces the branching of life from the first single celled organisms to the major groups of animals, plants, fungi, and microbes with key developments depicted along the way, such as bones in vertebrates, waterproof spores in plants, and metamorphosis in winged insects. It not only reflects the most current scientific research, but also reveals the exquisite beauty of the connections and diversity of life.
