October 2025 : This graphic evolutionary tree of modern birds has just been updated with recent research, adjusting both timing and branching events. While early avian relationships have been difficult to resolve, recent research using extensive genomic data has found that Paleognathae, Galloanserae, and the earliest branches of Neoaves all diversified prior to the extinction event 66 million years ago. After that extinction event, the four major Neoaves groups experienced rapid radiation, believed to result from new ecological opportunities. The graphics reflect the updated relationships of bird orders and their timing. Species numbers have also been added in this update.
