October 2025 : This graphic evolutionary tree of flowering plants has just been updated with recent research published by a group of over 300 biologists from around the world. This research used nuclear DNA rather than the often used, easier to access, chloroplast DNA from more than 9,500 species, reflecting all 64 orders and 416 families. The research combined genomic sequencing and the fossil record. It found that angiosperms had two surges of diversification. Eighty percent of modern angiosperm groups evolved during the first surge around 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Angiosperms then steadily diversified until the next surge, around 45 million years ago. The graphics portray this updated timing and branching. While the monophyly of current classifications largely remained unchanged, branching adjustments were made throughout, especially within the rosids.
