Lyme Regis
I was a bit obsessed with Mary Anning and the town of Lyme Regis in England after reading Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. For our anniversary, Mark surprised me by using frequent flyer miles to take us there! Despite cold rainy weather, and often very little hot water in the tiny places where we stayed, it was one of the most meaningful trips we’ve taken, feeling the history of the places where she lived and walked, and the much deeper history of life millions of years ago. This could be our favorite place in the world.
The Lyme Regis Museum was built on the site of Mary Anning’s home. The highlight of the trip was going on a fossil walk, led by Chris of the Museum, AMAZING.
Twice we paid visits to the Natural History Museum while in London on this trip. One included an evening of talks on Alfred Russel Wallace - it was a very special few hours for us. The event was one of a number events marking the centenary of Wallace’s death. Together, Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin both developed and advanced some of the major scientific concepts involving the evolution of species.
The Natural History Museum is awesome! The time flies away while there and by the end of the day your feet are very sore, but you’re reinspired and excited about all things in the natural world!
